REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME OR REMAIN AN ASSOCIATE MEMBER OF THE GUILD

Associate Membership of the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists is reserved for those people who are employed in public relations or similar fields; who make contributions to motoring journalism in other ways apart from direct writing, broadcasting or photography; and/or show a particular interest in the work and activities of the Guild to such a degree that the Committee considers them worthy of the status of Associate Membership.

  1. To qualify for Associate membership an applicant must be employed in motoring associated activities for some time and also have the intention of continuing to do so for the foreseeable future.
  2. An applicant must be proposed and seconded by current Full members who have personal knowledge of the candidate. Application forms that do not have signatures of both proposer and seconder are not tabled for consideration by the Committee.
  3. All members must agree to abide by the SAGMJ Constitution, the SAGMJ Code for Acceptance of Road Test Vehicles and the SAGMJ Code of Good Practice. The Guild expects a high standard of professional conduct and an acceptable standard of general behaviour from all its individual members. Each member of the Guild is required to ensure that neither the name of the Guild nor of its members is brought into disrepute either by their own direct actions or utterances, or by inference and innuendo.
  4. An applicant must agree to acknowledge and support the Guild's Pledge: The details of the pledge are as follows:
    I pledge to act in support of road safety initiatives which are associated with and / or arranged by the SAGMJ. These will be evidenced in my driving style, my adherence to road rules and the manner in which my conduct may impact on the safety of other motorists. I further pledge to use the platform made available to me as a journalist to positively influence all whom I have contact with
  5. All members must hold a current car driver’s licence for use in South Africa.
  6. No member shall undertake any work which could become prejudicial to the good name and credibility of other members and the Guild as a whole.
  7. All members must be up to date with all due payments.
  8. Like Full members, Associate members are subject to routine annual scrutiny by the Committee to ensure they are still involved in motoring activities and that they continue to meet all the criteria for eligibility.
  9. Associate members are not expected to do the Guild’s driving courses, but will have access to these when places are available at a discounted price, which would be for the member’s own account.

THE FOLLOWING NEED TO BE SUBMITTED IN ORDER TO APPLY FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP TO THE SAGMJ

  1. The completed A2 application form signed by the applicant as well as a signature by a proposer and seconder. The latter should be Full members of the Guild.
  2. Sufficient information to enable the Committee to make a considered decision – if applicable please provide samples of material (with the date of publication/broadcast), to indicate the extent and frequency of the work you do. Should you have an online publication you would need to implement Google Analytics in order for us to check your site activity. Please ensure that reports are directed to sagmj@iafrica.com at least one month before your application will be considered.
  3. A short motivation why you would like to become Full member of the Guild.
  4. A recent ID-sized photograph.
  5. A photocopy of your current driver’s licence.
  6. Payment for the current entrance fee and a year’s subscription (R362.70) to be done after membership has been approved. Membership will only be activated after receipt of payment.)
